Film fanatics take note: The 76th Annual Golden Globe Awards will air Sunday, January 6th, 2019 on NBC. The Globes may not carry the clout of the Academy Awards in the movie industry, but the show is looser, boozier, and more fun than its more stately counterpart. Past hosts like Ricky Gervais, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and Jimmy Fallon have delighted and sometimes shocked audiences with their witty banter and ribald cracks.

Viewers might also expect to see a controversial moment that electrifies the internet, as when Oprah Winfrey set Twitter abuzz about a possible presidential run in 2020 after a rousing acceptance speech at the 2017 Globes that touched on the #timesup movement and our current political moment.

The films and television programs nominated for Globe awards this year have fans around the world, but unfortunately, the show is only broadcast in the United States due to geographic restrictions. The same goes for the live internet stream which is also blocked in other countries. Movie and TV aficionados do have one option that will allow them to hack through the geo-block, though, and it is using a VPN.

Anyone wishing to watch the Golden Globes outside of the United States will run into the problem of regional lockouts that prohibit them from watching the awards ceremony live on TV or streaming the show online. The actual broadcast is not shown on networks outside of the U.S. and the two streaming options, NBC.com and Sling TV are unavailable, as well.

Subscribing to a VPN allows you to bypass geographical restrictions by routing your internet connection through a proxy server within the program’s country of origin, which is in this case, the U.S. For all intents and purposes, it appears to websites and streaming services that you are logging in within national borders. In addition to this awesome feature, VPNs offer great security and protection, with top-of-the-line 256-bit data encryption that prohibits anyone from spying on your connection. All in all, purchasing a VPN subscription offers users a ton of features for a low price.

Using a VPN to connect to a U.S. server will allow you to access the live stream of the Golden Globes on NBC.com, but unfortunately, you’ll need to put in local TV provider account info as well. For U.S. citizens currently living abroad, you may simply be able to ask a friend or family member within the United States for their TV provider subscription information. However, all others may be out of luck.

Fortunately, the second streaming option, Sling TV, which is compatible with most phones, tablets, and digital media players (see Supported Devices below for more info), does not require you to share a local TV provider in order to use it, but you will need to order a subscription to the service.

Sling TV offers two subscription options, Sling Blue and Sling Orange, which both allow you to live stream over twenty of the top American TV channels. To stream the Golden Globes, you’ll want to choose Sling Blue, the plan that allows you to live stream NBC.

A subscription to Sling TV costs $25 a month for one of the two options, or $40 a month for access to both, but if you are only looking to use the service in order to stream the Golden Globes, Sling offers a seven-day free trial. Simply sign up for the service the day before the broadcast, and cancel the subscription within a week, and you won’t be charged anything.

  5. Log in to your brand new Sling TV account on your supported device and choose the NBC live stream as the Golden Globe awards show begins.
  • In order to be competitive, the top VPNs have downloadable clients for most any operating system, handheld device, and digital media player. More than likely Windows, MacOS, iOS, Android, Apple TV,, Android TV, Amazon Firestick and Fire TV, and Roku will be supported.
  • VPNs typically offer support for several simultaneous connections, meaning that you can have at least three devices routed through a VPN server at all times.
  • Sling TV is compatible with Windows, Chromecast, Android, and Apple phones, digital media players such as Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, gaming consoles like XBox One, and more. Check the website for a more extensive list.
