AdGuard VPN gets talked about a lot in the same breath as AdGuard’s ad blocker, and that’s really where it shines: it’s easy to turn on and forget, and people like how it pairs with ad blocking and DNS filtering. Some folks also like the idea behind its TrustTunnel protocol, which is meant to make your traffic blend in more like normal HTTPS—handy if you care about privacy or dealing with censorship. If you already use AdGuard (or AdGuard Home on your router), it can feel like a clean, all-in-one setup.

The biggest complaints are about reliability and performance—slow speeds for some people (especially on mobile data), app crashes, and annoying connectivity quirks on Android setups. iPhone users also call out battery drain, and there’s frustration around marketing promises (like availability in certain countries) and calls for clearer independent auditing. Another common theme: it may not play nicely with other VPN apps, so it can feel a bit “use our VPN or nothing” if you rely on a different VPN provider.

Strengths

  • Easy to use day-to-day
  • Pairs well with AdGuard ad blocking
  • Strong DNS filtering options
  • Useful for censorship-heavy networks
  • Works nicely with AdGuard Home/router setups

Weaknesses

  • Slow speeds for some people
  • Battery drain complaints on iOS
  • Crashes and connectivity issues (especially Android)
  • Doesn’t play nicely with other VPN apps
  • Trust and auditing questions
Best for: People already using AdGuard who want everything in one ecosystem Anyone who wants simple ad blocking plus VPN in one switch Users who like DNS-based filtering and router-level blocking People who occasionally need help on restrictive networks
Not ideal for: Anyone who needs consistently fast speeds on mobile data People who want a VPN that works smoothly alongside other VPN tools iPhone users who are sensitive to battery drain Privacy purists who only trust heavily audited, ultra-transparent services

"Love you Adguard! Just bought a new wifi 7 router and it included Adguard Home on the router. Simply toggle the switch to turn it on (GL.iNet Flint 3). Amazing!"

"AdGuard VPN I am a big fan of AdGuard blocker and I promote it whenever occasion arises. I have it both on windows and Android. However I am not fully satisfied with the VPN. I purchased the VPN primarily for Android. Because at that time I was convinced that both the blocker and vpn should work together for maximum benefit. I have 3 years subscription left. My issue is that it disconnects very frequently ( Android ) Whenever there is a network change adguard goes off and never comes back on its own Before adguard I was with surfshark. Just like adguard I had long term subscription..."

"\> It disguises your VPN traffic as regular HTTPS — so it looks just like normal browsing.  No it doesn't. or at least it doesn't really work. I live in country which really doesn't like VPNs. cross-border Wireguard doesn't work(sometimes even in-country Wireguard doesn't), OpenVPN,etc doesn't work too. Amnezia using AWG DOES work (both Amnezia Premium and Self-hosted). VLESS-based solutions (Xeovo, self-hosted XRay,etc) work. Adguard VPN (or Proton VPN) doesn't work. Pity. Adguard + Adguard VPN pair was very convinient. Is there plans to make it possible at least to connect regular ..."

"I’m experiencing something similar. I just purchased the AdBlocker + VPN bundle, but I’ve noticed the connection speed is painfully slow, especially when I’m on mobile data. I’m also encountering the issue someone else mentioned about getting assigned a Russian IP with most European servers.I also have Surfshark, which I’ve had problems with as well. For now, I’ll probably switch between the two services. Both have about three years left on their subscriptions, so I might as well make the most of them."

">their apps are not open source, I feel like I can't trust them. Closed-source doesn't automatically mean something is untrustworthy, just like open-source stuff doesn't automatically mean something is trustworthy. Open-source stuff can be safer *if* people have been reviewing the code or if you are capable of reviewing it yourself, but I can assure you that developers aren't generally out there reviewing random Github projects on their spare time. Either way, AdGuard is fine. It is fairly well known to be a reputable service."

"I just set the DNS on my devices to point to the AdGuard DoH/DoT servers. No apps and no subscription (I don't have any need to customize it, or track whatever stats they provide). As far as being open source is concerned, while that is preferable unless you can review and build the code yourself (and actually do it) you are still reliant on the four Rs. Reviews, Reputation, Recommendations, and Reactions to problems. * Is AdGuard well reviewed? Yes. * Does AdGuard have a good reputation? Yes. * Is AdGuard recommended by expert and experienced people? Yes * Does AdGuard react well to securit..."

"Popular apps & platforms are waaaay more scrutinised, open source or not (it does not matter in some communities since inspection is not illegal), than open source apps that have a user base of some hundreds of thousands or some millions and therefore are just well known but not used. You need eyes on the code. Adguard is an established and very widely used service *and* constantly scrutinised by the security / hacking community."

"AdGuard just open sourced its censorship-dodging TrustTunnel so anyone can hide VPN traffic inside normal HTTPS. Governments hunt VPN fingerprints while your traffic quietly cosplays Chrome on port 443 #VPN"

"It's a crazy job, and kudos to the developers. I'm still angry about the misleading marketing surrounding AdGuard VPN, which has been announcing "coming soon" availability in countries that never materializes. But I'm still a big fan of all the other AdGuard products. The problem with a "custom" protocol, however useful and effective it may be, is that it cannot be used in routers because it is not supported. It won't be anytime soon that Unifi will add it."

"[Android] Connectivity issues when using Adguard via VPN-Tunnel to my home network A decent while ago, I set up Adguard as a Raspberry Pi-install and used a WireGuard VPN-Tunnel to my Router (a FritzBox) to route my phone traffic through the Ad-Filters. Recently tho I had to set the whole thing up new. Shouldn't have been a problem, since I have done it before, and it all worked fine on the surface. Except now, whenever I enable the connection, the traffic isn't coming through anymore. The connection itself seems to be fine, I get no errors. Only endless loading. Has anyone experienced th..."

"Adguard ADVERTISES more. Doesn’t mean it’s better. Suggest reviewing the Hagezi block lists which includes a cut down version identical to Adguard. Since you can run these a ton of ways FOR FREE, why pay a subscription? Second, DNS blocking only gets you so far. For instance YouTube ads are hosted on the same site. Only hacked YT clients can actually block YT ads. Same with Google search."

"Awesome news! This might be a stupid question, but are there any plans to allow the TrustTunnel client to connect to AdGuard VPN servers? (Maybe it already does?) I have several years of AdGuard VPN already paid for (thank you stacksocial), and I can envision wanting to use my own infrastructure most of the time but occasionally use an AdGuard server that's in a specific country. I suppose having both clients installed would enable this usage, but it'd nice to have the TrustTunnel be able to handle both."

"I think it’s because AdGuard and NordVPN have two VPNs on your device. Only one can be active at any given time. On Android it’s pretty easy to get around this. Put the AdGuard DNS in ‘Private DNS’ in the Network settings. You can go to Quad9, DNSbunker.org (my fave as it has HaGeZi Pro and TIF), ControlD, AdGuard or even Cloudflare and get the TLS addresses from there. You’ll need the DoT and not DoH for this. That will make sure your DNS server is always AdGuard. And then when you enable NordVPN that will still work."

"Some of their products are open source. You can check out their github: [AdGuard](https://github.com/AdguardTeam) You should also not buy from them directly but through a 3rd party like stacksocial which often has family lifetime deals (with codes) for less than their annual subscription for an individual. But you should ask yourself why you want to use them too. Zen is a FOSS desktop app, Brave has adblocking integrated, UBO / adguard extensions work well in firefox on both desktop and mobile, etc. You have options. Paying for adguard mostly buys you the mobile app as a differentiator w..."
