What the Community Says
Mullvad has a really strong reputation for privacy, and it’s one of the few VPNs people trust when they say “no logs.” It’s also loved for letting you sign up without an email and pay in very private ways (even by mail), plus it avoids the whole influencer/affiliate marketing vibe that turns some folks off. Day to day, people often describe it as fast and stable, especially with WireGuard, and solid for general browsing and torrenting.
The biggest downside is that it’s not the best pick if streaming is your main goal—some people run into services like ESPN or other apps not working reliably. There are also complaints about features changing over time (like port forwarding being removed), which can be a dealbreaker for certain setups. And while many call the price fair, others feel it’s a bit expensive for a “simple” VPN if you’re not specifically buying it for privacy-first features.
Strengths
- Strong privacy focus
- No email required
- Anonymous payment options
- Fast speeds (especially with WireGuard)
- Good for torrenting
- Trusted “no-logs” reputation
- No influencer/affiliate marketing feel
Weaknesses
- Streaming can be hit or miss
- Port forwarding no longer supported
- Can feel pricey for a basic VPN
- Some apps/services may block it

50 reviews"Exactly. Anyone looking for a proper VPN btw, that won't get hit by the ban, and won't bend to the UK government, take a look at Mullvad. Years ago when they were raided, they just let the police in because they had literally NO logs of anything, at all. All the VPNs you get advertised on YouTube say they don't keep logs, but they do and police reports prove it. ExpressVPN / PIA / Surfshark etc - these are all completely useless if there's a ban or the Government comes knocking. Does anyone know of any other proper VPNs that can actually be counted on?"
"The offices and homes of Mullvad employees and their families have been raided multiple times by their government, not one piece of custom information has ever been found. There are also many technical reasons they are superior to Proton. And Obscura is a double hop VPN that exits via Mullvad."
"If you really want to use a VPN, my personal recommendation is Mullvad. It's cheap and private and just works; no worthless frills or shady business practices."
"@SIGNAL_RETURN @ProtonMail Love Mullvad, the best VPN you can get at an affordable price!"
"@SIGNAL_RETURN @ProtonMail Yeah Mullvad is the only VPN you should ever pay for. I think every email provider will suffer similar limitations for encryption, but Proton is such a cash grab atp so I understand the distrust."
"@0xMiaWallace @ILikeTheFA mullvad literally, court proven no logs and no account info either (gives you a unique account number) and also doesnt suck"
"@elhombre_negro @JOKAQARMY1 YES. People who have any experience know that Mullvad is the best. They have been court-tested to NOT log, and they don't advertise. Any VPN company that advertises is most certainly trash."
"Mullvad is amazingly good. Use it on my PC and my phone for 2-3 years now, nonstop. Speed is amazing, playing games trough it is no problem. The price is also very low at 5$/Month. With every way of paying avaiable. Even sending them cash in a letter is possible."
"@grok @Digitalizedx @DanKornas @ProtonVPN No it’s not reliable. Owned by an Israeli company, they used to distribute malware, and now own multiple VPNs and an antivirus and the review sites that recommend them. Mullvad is the only reliable VPN."
"@akuro_kijin Mullvad VPN. It's truly anonymous. No email needed, you can even pay in cash if you want. No logs. I get way better download speeds with them than I did with Proton VPN, which slowed to a halt after about 2gb. Based in Sweden 🐐 €5 about $5.50 per month. Worth it!"
"@faust_knows_all Use mullvad vpn if it gets banned. Best vpn of all time."
"@windscribecom Gotta be honest here guys, I’ve deep-dived into Proton, Mullvad, and your stack and I’d still pick Mullvad ten times out of ten, unless your threat model prioritizes unblocking Netflix over actual privacy, Mullvad remains superior, especially on the PQC front"
"@T3chFalcon Fun fact 99% of these vpns will leak data, the "audit" they do isnt even monitored most times and most data is static... Use Mullvad, best for opsec, $5 a month (can pay cash even in the mail), and the data is never stored, only in ram for volatility..."
"@DeeOakster @T3chFalcon The good VPN providers run such a large profit margin as-is that they don't need to sell your data. Still good to minimize the data you give them though. Mullvad is the best because you don't have to give them any personal info whatsoever, and they are audited no logs."
"@Le_Bruh_Moment @windscribecom I agree Mullvad is goated, can even send fucking cash in an envelope with your user id and itll activate"
"@iamwilsxn mullvad is the best vpn and its super cheap"
"@samshistoryjam @theashrb Mullvad supremacy, you can even post them cash if you’re extremely paranoid"
"@tjalve @SIGNAL_RETURN @ProtonMail @ProtonVPN I haven't seen anything damning for ProtonVPN, it seems decent. But if you're going to pay, then you might as well go with Mullvad; it's clearly the best VPN."
"@TutaPrivacy Mullvad is the most GOATED out of all these"
"@KaspaHub @brave @Proton_Pass @ProtonDrive @ProtonVPN @StandardNotes @weawowcom @unstoppablebyhs I use nexcloud for self hosting cloud. Mullvad for best privacy vpn. Mullvad accepts crypto as well i have not convinced them to accept kaspa yet."
"@Le_Bruh_Moment @windscribecom Mullvad is the best one I’ve used. They even sell codes on Amazon and you don’t need to put in any personal information to use it"
"@Jennifer_Arcuri Mullvad. You can even send them cash to pay for their service if you want complete anonymity. Plus, they don't give away your data they've been raided a few times and the police got nothing. They walk the walk."
"@craig100 @gettingtrumpnow @TheBritishIntel @GrapheneOS Don't use nord, use mullvad or proton vpn. mullvad is the best, obscura also uses mullvads network. Graphene OS is a must now, and permanent VPNs and proxies ran through wifi hardware."
"@CryptoCyberia mullvad is the greatest software on earth"
"@rasmalai ProtonVPN is great, but Mullvad is the no-BS privacy gold standard."
"@CryptoNomads_gm mullvad @mullvadnet is the best"
"Mullvad VPN solves this btw"
"@Pirat_Nation Mullvad VPN Thank me later"
"@grimwolden5339 @Artemisfornow Mullvad is the only one that I know for sure keep zero logs, proven by police records. All other VPNs I've looked into say they don't but do. Do you know any other good ones @grimwolden5339"
"@BoogRetard @love42189 @minguluh2 @KeterType25309 @Wishitwasthewa1 Also you don’t need username and mail for Mullvad, they generate acc number for you to log in with and when you combine it with sending cashed through postal services you get true anonymity"
"@TutaPrivacy I personally use Librefox & Brave but honest ranking should be : 1) Tor 2) Mullvad 3) Librefox 4) Brave 5) Zen or Vivaldi Then other browsers are full of tracking & fingerprinting. You can enhance Firefox with plugins that leave with more fingerprinting... So more risks."
"@reddyred7712 @stupidtechtakes @cocoabun_ yea mullvad with crypto is brilliant. But that is more friction for a normy."
"join me in my journey to deamericanism/privitize(partially) my life instead of tiktok use rednote instead of google use duckduckgo(not rhe bets but the best rn) instead of any vpn but these use airvpn or mullvad instead of chrome use firefox recommend me alternatives for others"
"@windscribecom I tryed windscrive ugly ui and controls and slow as hell I stay at mullvad <3"
"@windscribecom I trust Mullvad, you can even pay with cash"
"@Netwarfare420 @StarkPrivacy @grok Mullvad runs because they have the trust and support. Other ones sold out because of legal threats and other stuff. Safety wise, mullvad and windscribe are pretty good options (windscribe was in court for 2 years and proved no logs + cheaper) yeah mullvad or windscribe are good"
"@JOKAQARMY1 As far as I know the best and most private ones are Proton, Mullvad and IVPN. Personally I use Proton because they have a suite of apps and it's very convenient but if you only need a vpn the others are great too. But at the end of the day you have to trust them so yeah."
"@Anti_Tyranny_1 @JOKAQARMY1 As far as I know the best and most private ones are Proton, Mullvad and IVPN. Personally I use Proton because they have a suite of apps and it's very convenient but if you only need a vpn they others are great too."
"❌ Kullanma: Chrome Google Gmail Zoom Opera Safari Google Drive LastPass Instagram TikTok ChatGpt Atlas ✅ Kullan: Brave Startpage Tutamail Jitsi Firefox Focus Proton Drive KeepassXC DuckDuckGo Zen Browser Protonmail Bitwarden Mullvad VPN Proton VPN Surfshark VPN"
"@DaveFred311115 @ReclaimTheNetHQ Ef Proton. Mullvad is the real deal. And Obscura is even a level up on that."
"@Pirat_Nation Get on Proton or Mullvad now and you won't get flagged for ID later. That's the short term fix."
"@themagic_tophat @PeterSweden7 because it's about anonymity for many - an example is something like Mullvad VPN, you can pay for it with cash, and zero logs"
"@startpage @torproject @signalapp @MyStartMail @ProtonPrivacy 1) Any Linux OS but I prefer Fedora 2) Quad9 ( DNS privacy) 3) Tor, Brave, Librewolf (browsers) 4) ProtonVPN ( free), Mullvad ( paid) 5) Session, Signal (Messaging) 6) Tutamail & Protonmail 7) GrapheneOS over any phone OS 8) Orbot (basically Tor but for apps) 9) VLC 10) Bitwarden https://t.co/ZwS1OgTYXz"
"@JKing55378907 @OperatorK5 @BasilTheGreat TOR is a lot faster than it used to be but you do run into a lot of CAPTCHAs or outright site blocks with it. I've messed around with various privacy tools and I have found that Mullvad Privacy Browser with a Proton or Mullvad proxy extension is the best balance for browsing."
"Here's what actually protects your privacy: A reputable VPN (Mullvad, ProtonVPN). Tor Browser for true anonymity. Pi-hole to block tracking at the network level. Firefox with privacy extensions. Incognito mode? Not on the list."
"@BasilTheGreat Better yet.. Download a VPN, pick a Swiss one like ProtonVPN or Swedish like Mullvad.. Five Eyes (UK+US+mates) can’t just poke about and grab logs.. Audited no-logs policy actually holds up .. Real privacy move .."
"@0xMiaWallace Hate antivirus if you are on shady websites. Keeps trying restrain access. Just get mullvad VPN and use Brave Browser"
"8. Use "Private Relay" or a No-Log VPN Your ISP (Internet Service Provider) sees every site you visit. In many countries, they sell this browsing history legally. Use iCloud Private Relay or a reputable No-Log VPN (Mullvad or Proton). Mask your IP. Encrypt your tunnel."
