What the Community Says

Community Rating 7.5/10

hide.me comes up as a solid, privacy-leaning VPN that a lot of people feel comfortable using day to day. It gets points for practical features like a kill switch and split tunneling (selective routing), and it seems to work especially smoothly on Android TV devices like the Nvidia Shield and Firestick. The free tier also feels less pushy than many others, so you can try it without being constantly nagged to upgrade.

The vibe online is still mixed, and not everyone has a great experience—some people mention slow speeds, which can be a dealbreaker if you’re streaming or downloading a lot. It’s also worth paying attention to things like server locations, pricing, and how the trial/free plan limits line up with what you need. If torrenting is a big reason you want a VPN, you’ll want to double-check which servers support it and whether performance stays steady.

Strengths

  • Kill switch
  • Split tunneling (selective routing)
  • Works well on Android TV / Nvidia Shield
  • Free tier that isn’t overly pushy
  • Privacy-focused reputation

Weaknesses

  • Slow speeds for some people
  • Price can feel high depending on the plan
  • Server locations may not fit everyone
  • Torrenting performance can be hit-or-miss
Best for: Android TV / Nvidia Shield and Firestick users who want a VPN that just works People who want a free VPN option without constant upgrade pressure Privacy-minded users who want basics like a kill switch and split tunneling
Not ideal for: Anyone who needs consistently fast speeds for streaming or heavy downloading Budget shoppers who want the cheapest long-term plan People who mainly want a VPN for torrenting and don’t want to troubleshoot server choices

"So you need a VPN app with a kill switch? I use [hide.me](http://hide.me) since many years and am very happy with it. On my Shield I can use it with a kill switch and it also has selective routing. This is where you can tell which apps on your Shield should go the route of VPN and which ones don't. Some apps can detect VPN and don't run. Great VPN provider in my case! Good luck & I hope I understood your question correctly."

"...lso worried it would be one of those traps where they limit you so much you feel forced to pay, but hide.me did not bug me constantly to upgrade. It was subtle."

"Not all are created equal. One company bought up several. Not all are slow. Just get one with the Wireguard protocol. I leave it running all the time and can even max my 500gb home connection speed downloading mirror files from my seedbox simultaneously and it never slows down. Mullvad for the win. I used Mullvad. Proton is also good. You want one with no logging. .* Mullvad (you can even do it without giving up email, just pay (can even use crypto) and you have an account number and that's it. (Best for privacy) " Proton (solid but inconsistent speeds when I recently tried it again). ..."

"Search doesn't help when I don't remember what to search for so I use folders to organize myself. For instance, I have a folder for all the financial things I have to do each month like credit cards and mortgage to pay. So I open the bitwarden app, open that folder and just go down them one by one clicking on launch website. Same thing with sites for my kid's school. I don't remember infinite canvas or campus or qustodio their sports things like teamsnap or family controls for windows or android usage, etc. So I just open the manage family folder and I can see just those entries and don't have..."

"Hide.me reviews in 2026: Is it considered a scam? I'm looking for a privacy-focused VPN, and Hide.me keeps coming up as a solid choice because they're based in Malaysia and have a good reputation for their no-logs policy. They also offer a free version, which is great because I want to test it out before committing to a long-term plan. However, I've read that the free version has really slow speeds and a limited server network. I'm trying to figure out if the free version is actually usable for anything more than basic browsing. I need something reliable fast, but I'm scared of getting trapp..."
