ExpressVPN comes up a lot as a “just works” VPN: people like that it’s easy to use, connects quickly, and stays stable without much fiddling. It’s often praised for feeling fast in day-to-day browsing and for helping with streaming by letting you switch your location to watch shows from other countries. If you want something straightforward on phones (including iOS) and don’t want to babysit your connection, it tends to fit that vibe.
The biggest downside people bring up is the price—many feel it’s expensive compared to other options, even if the reliability is good. There’s also ongoing skepticism about trust and ownership, with some pointing to past controversies and corporate ties as reasons to be cautious if privacy is your top priority. And if you specifically need a VPN for China, plenty of people say it’s unreliable there or doesn’t work consistently, so it’s not the safest bet for the Great Firewall.
Strengths
- Fast everyday speeds
- Stable connection
- Easy to use
- Good for streaming
- Simple location switching
Weaknesses
- Can be pricey
- Trust and ownership concerns
- Doesn’t work well in China
- Some censorship bypass limits

50 reviews"...t spent 15 days all over China (Chengdu, Beijing, Shanghai, Guilin, Hangzhou, Suzhou, Shanghai) and ExpressVPN worked perfect, I had no troubles at all and usually connected to a Washington server."
"I consider ExpressVPN a fraudulent scamming VPN provider because of the serious problems I was having with them, especially with disabling Auto-renew. They claimed it was for protection and security for the subscriber. Ironic, in the last few months of my sub I had to disconnect ExpressVPN many times after I started up my PC to access websites. On one occasion, my Bank account manager was able to get a refund of HK $2000.00 from ExpressVPN because they enable Auto-renew automatically without informing or getting permission from their subscribers."
"Is ExpressVPN Good? My Experience Despite all the controversy around them, I decided to just try ExpressVPN myself. Im not interested in politics!!!! So keep it to yourself!!! Ive been using it for the past 3 months while working abroad and I needed something that would let me access my usual sites and apps without random disconnects or painful slowdowns. Honestly, ExpressVPN surprised the crap out of me in a good way! The setup is super simple. I installed it on my laptop and phone, and I didnt have to hunt down tutorials or tweak complicated settings. It was basically install..."
"pretty sure all the VPNs owned by Kape (ExpressVPN, CyberGhost, NordVPN, IPVanish, many others) are Mossad honeypots Proton apparently a honeypot as well"
"@EntityMystik @CryptoCyberia expressVPN is bad they are farming data. forgot the name of the company that have recently bought them for 900M+ but this company owns about 27 VPN’s companies and what is most hilarious is that they even own vpn review sites. anyway stay away crom them"
"@expressvpn @yeswehack Just want to say, i have used @expressvpn for over 10 years...on my phone, computers and even on my home router. You guys are the very best! Speeds, speeds, speeds...locations, UI, thank you for what you do and keeping us safe. 🫶💙"
"@LozzaFox @Keir_Starmer Can I recommend @expressvpn I’ve used them on all devices for 11 years now. Excellent. Exceptional actually. 100 $US a year."
"@expressvpn Absolutely the worst VPN We are constantly having problems every time we try to use it It drops out and lags during programs we try to watch Why pay for a service that doesn’t provide quality services https://t.co/fzyCQuGokw"
"@TheBritishIntel if I have to delete YouTube i will lol. @expressvpn are dogshit. I can't watch certain things on youtube with the vpn on and a lot of websites don't work with it either. waste of £80"
"I've been using ExpressVPN for a while and it's been very consistent overall. The connection stays stable even when switching networks and speeds don't really dip much. It's been reliable for everyday browsing and streaming without random disconnects."
"ExpressVPN was bought by a data broker... And NordVPN was hacked at least twice. I would not use either. ProtonVPN or MullvadVPN are the only ones I trust."
"Yes. Switched from Nord last year & ExpressVPN has been much better. Has unlocked all the geolocked services I use from the U.S. OP."
"I have used ExpressVpn for several years as a paid subscriber. I have experienced no issues."
"ExpressVPN does not work in China. Search up efanyun or something that works on clash-based vpn. Are you using vpn on your phone or computer? Shadowrocket for iphone. FlClash for android, windows, macos, linux. But those are just the clash-based client. You will need to find a vpn subscription service, like efanyun. FlClash and clash-rev-verge has some recommendations on their github page that will work in China."
"Does ExpressVPN Still Work with MLB TV in 2026? I tested ExpressVPN recently to watch my favorite NBA team through League Pass, and it actually worked better than I expected. I am currently living in Texas, so a lot of the games are restricted locally. I had seen people mention VPN workarounds in free VPN Reddit posts, but most free options I tried either did not offer enough US locations or were blocked by the streaming site. I connected using ExpressVPN to a server in Illinois and everything loaded right away. After signing into League Pass, the game played without any location error messa..."
"ExpressVPN has always been super reliable for me when it comes to getting around blackouts and regional blocks. It's fast and consistent, which is all I really care about during a game."
"I tried a few before settling, I ended up sticking with expressvpn mostly because it hasn't given me problems. Speeds are fine, connections don't randomly drop and it behaves the same whether I'm on wifi or mobile data"
"I’ve been using express vpn for years. It has a kill switch and is super fast. I bought proton’s Black Friday deal hoping to save money, but it’s way slower and doesnt work very good with a few apps on my shield. The app that’s called “browser”."
"well first stop the sub to expressvpn, its junk lol and owned by israeli company you need a vpn that allows port forwarding, generally proton and airvpn are decent options for this."
"Agreed! I am also on a two year subscription with SurfShark, and the service sucks. Lesson learned, as I also am with ExpressVPN as well and that is working great thus far. Won’t be renewing at all with them once my term ends. I also believe the unlimited use of it for members on unlimited devices is causing too much congestion on their networks."
"for reliable fast, no logs VPN use - Nord VPN, express VPN, or Mullvad are solid picks that actually work well."
"I’ve been on expressvpn for a while, the speeds stay good and it doesn’t mess with my stuff."
"ExpressVPN was my first and favourite but Proton is able to bypass streaming services that block vpn. (except for hidive in my experience) Proton didn’t change my TikTok feed as much as ExpressVPN but I think that has more to do with my settings."
"Just wanna add to the post that not all VPNs work. Do your research and don’t be like me who got scammed by ExpressVPN for a year ($99). They used to work but stopped working, that was 2 years ago. Not sure if they work now. I finally found a good VPN that’s cheaper than Express and works better, hopefully it still works since I’m going back next month. Some said that the VPN I was using worked too well it might be government-backed and monitors your usage, but if you don’t say shit online you’d be fine. Just ask your friends who’s actually in China before you go for the good on..."
"Based on privacy policies/practices and speed I would say Mullvad. Never anything owned by Malware company Kape technologies . They own a bunch of vpn companies like PIA and ExpressVPN as well as a vpn review website."
"Did you say VPN... VPN INFO I compiled & Suggested based on Verifications Disclaimer---I have NO affiliation with any entity here or similar What a VPN does-- Encrypts traffic between your device and an internet server to generally mask your IP from local networks your ISP etc. It can make you look like you’re in a different location for a variety of reasons. Some use them to get access to different or blocked content VPN’s CAN be used to provide more security on public WiFi at airports, cafes, restaurants etc. It can allow one to bypass school, work or Gov firewalls, helps w..."
"They are owned by Kape, who was formerly Crossrider, a malware company, and the founders have ties to Unit 8200 the Israeli counter intelligence unit. They also want express VPN and hired a known spy who have been convicted of helping the United Arab Emirates hack people around the world. Call me crazy, but I prefer my VPN to not be owned and run by literal spies and former malware distributors 😂"
"Express VPN is not worth it / review I've been subscribed for 2.5 years until recently. At first it seemed ok but as time went by the quality of their services has plummeted. I will try to sum up everything as shortly as possible. 1. **Removing your credit card info is always a 2 day ordeal.** For starters you can't do it manually, you have to contact customer support if you want it removed. Not talking about unsubscribing / opting out of automatic renewal (which they have on by default) but actual client data. After speaking to a customer service representative it usually gets d..."
"Let’s start with the features removed. The map that so many loved and allowed us to distinguish where we were logged into city wise or country, was taken down. Nord by their own admission has had many complaints since removing this map, and even promised to reinstate it, but have failed to act in that promise. Another major feature of Nord that was removed was the ability to reach customer service by live chat or at least send an email from the app itself. Also the reviews I have read have all stated that Proton is NOT known for its speed. PC magazine is really the only source I can remembe..."
"That is your opinion. As a customer of Nord, Express, and SurfShark, I would put Nord a fair bit back of Express in the number two position, almost on par with SurfShark. Nord is going down real quick, which is very evident by the bad reviews on here and on social media in general. Their speed is slowly diminishing, their customer service is the shits now, and they have removed many useful features, only to have their useless internet elves stating they will learn from their mistakes, but NEVER DO!!! Light years behind Express and falling fast."
"I use three, mullvad for security, Express for geo and air vpn for the high seas. For me each has a specific purpose. You don’t have to do that of course. You decide what’s best for you. Cheers 🍻"
"Best for privacy: MullVad, CopVPN, ProtonVPN. Best for speed: Surfshark, Express, NordVPN."
"Express has been the best for the BBC for me"
"Express is bad - why not use Proton, unlimited free, audited."
"100% agree. The Nord and Expresses of the world have long be known as unusable in China - it’s pretty much common knowledge at this point among foreigners in China. I for one had used Astrill for years while living in China and while it had always been reliably stable, I remained puzzled about how it was able to circumvent the GFW when others could not, and figured they had struck some sort of deal with the govt and that my privacy was therefore compromised (a tradeoff I was willing to make). Currently I’m using Letsvpn which based on my short experience is cheaper than Astrill by a sign..."
"Sadly, VPN is a big business these days, and they are not the only ones doing this. To my knowledge, only Astrill has worked consistently in China over the years, but they are rumored to be owned by a Chinese entity... On the other hand, boldly disregard Express and Nord, those mofos got the boots to their asses at some points and never made a comeback to China."
"Exactly. Anyone looking for a proper VPN btw, that won't get hit by the ban, and won't bend to the UK government, take a look at Mullvad. Years ago when they were raided, they just let the police in because they had literally NO logs of anything, at all. All the VPNs you get advertised on YouTube say they don't keep logs, but they do and police reports prove it. ExpressVPN / PIA / Surfshark etc - these are all completely useless if there's a ban or the Government comes knocking. Does anyone know of any other proper VPNs that can actually be counted on?"
"@ArachneEnjoyer @ProtonVPN @PlayStation ExpressVPN lowkey dog poopoo 😭 I'd suggest Nord Or Surfshark"
"🚨 BREAKING 🚨 ExpressVPN reports that Login details of 149 MILLION+ accounts, including Gmail, Facebook & Netflix, have been LEAKED. Users are urged to CHANGE passwords & enable 2FA IMMEDIATELY. #DataLeaked #ExpressVPN https://t.co/xAScXL7K1i"
"Some nigga on strawpage tried doxxing me but @expressvpn saved me Thanks"
"@MaxNordau Makes sense, Israelis do disguise surveillance products as tech products. Some examples: TM Signal - logs Signal chats for Israeli review Or their VPN honeypots disguised as privacy products- ExpressVPN/PIA/GhostVPN/etc. All Israeli owned, for sure not used for data collection"
"@BasilTheGreat I recommend ExpressVPN for those under 18. Works nicely e.g. In China."
"@BasilTheGreat @theipaper If you don't have a VPN already people download NordVPN or ExpressVPN for the monthly cost of a coffee, you will be able to circumvent this ban!"
"@expressvpn Seriously why does your product constantly drop out and freeze all the time Very frustrating and disappointing"
"@AidanSimardone Just use VPN not backed and controlled by Israel or Mossad Just Google “VPNs Israel” and you should get some articles on this and which the Israeli ran VPNs, such as ExpressVPN and PIA"
"@RyanMattaMedia If you have an expressvpn account toss it immediately"
"@formulaleonog7 @SteadyHearn Use Nord or ExpressVPN, that's legit"
"⚠️ Both ExpressVPN and CyberGhost are owned by Kape Technologies, which has significant Israeli & unit 8200 connections ⚠️ Israeli Teddy Sagi (vi Unikmind) • Former name: Crossrider, an adware/malware company that built platforms for injecting ads into software."
"@SaarNil72 What Elizabeth said about ExpressVPN is correct. They will hand over data to authorities at the drop of a hat. As usual, do your own research."
"@elonmusk LMAO, those dudes have not heard of VPN. I recommend ExpressVPN. That gets you trough to X e.g. in China."
